The Art of Donald E Brown

Donald E Brown is a Portland, Oregon artist specializing in portraiture who captures his subject in beautiful color.   His fauvist style is used to portray the character and personality of each subject, and yet he maintains a visually recognizable portrait quality.  He specializes in portraits of dogs, cats and kids, but also does family portraiture, and has painted many other animals for his clients.  When you commission Donald to have your child or favorite pet painted, Donald will interview you and ask you a serious of questions about your subject.  From that interview he will choose a unique color palette specifically for your painting.  This allows his clients to participate in the artistic process with him.

"If it doesn't have eyes, I don't paint it.  For me, all the expression of a painting is through the subject's eyes.  Even my abstract work has eyes," said Donald.  "Through my use of color and careful attention to the eyes I try to touch the soul and being of my subject."

Donald generally paints on canvas using acrylic paints and sometimes includes other media.  Square canvases are his preference but he is flexible with his client's needs and the composition of the piece, as well.  He works from photographs, and enjoys meeting his subjects in person when possible.

Donald received his initial art training at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, but also worked with a variety of artists at The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia who had an impact on his work.  Donald was a participating artist in the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach, California for a number of years, and several artists influenced his work there.
