DONALD E. BROWN, LAGUNA BEACH

as seen in the September Issue of Orange Coast Magazine

Donald e. Brown says his favorite part of each portrait never  changes. "I love painting eyes; whenever I do a portrait, the focal point  is always the subject's eyes, " says the artist, who developed his Expressionist  style about two years ago and uses it to capture the nature of his subjects,  which are commonly people and pets. Each portrait begins as a photograph  that Brown scans into a computer to create a black and white model. "I don't  want to be influenced by real colors, " he says. " I try to use color to reflect  the character and the energy of the subject. If I am painting a dog and  it's excitable, I'll use yellow and oranges and reds. If it's mellow, I'll use violet or green or blue. And I paint people the same way." Brown's work  has appeared at the Orange County Fair and a gallery in Washington, D.C.  and he is participating in the Sawdust Festival for the first time this year.  But it's the work he displays at specialty pet stores such as Fidos on  Fourth in Laguna Beach that has led to many of his commissions. "It's  really working well," he says. "It's a good niche."
